Timberland's story began in 1918, in a small Boston, Massachusetts shoe company where founder, Nathan Swartz, began his bootmaking career as an apprentice stitcher. In 1952, he bought half an interest in The Abington Shoe Company. Three years later, he bought the remaining interest and welcomed his sons into the company. Together, they made shoes for leading manufacturers for nearly 10 years. In the '60s, waterproof leather boots as we know them didn't really exist. The Swartz family helped change all that by introducing injection-molding technology to the footwear industry. This technology fused soles to leather uppers without stitching, producing one of the first truly waterproof boots.
In 1973, the Timberland name was born. "Timberland" started as the brand name for the original waterproof leather boot. Then, because the boot was so popular, the company name was officially changed to The Timberland Company. In 1978 and 1979, Timberland added casual and boat shoes to its line to become more than just a boot company. In the 1980s, the company expanded into an international lifestyle brand. Sidney Swartz took the reigns and under his leadership Timberland was launched in Italy, their first entry into the international market (today they're represented all over the world).

For people who live and work outdoors – from hunters, skiers and winter campers, to lumberjacks, explorers and bush pilots – the name Sorel is synonymous with quality, durability and value. Launched more than 40 years ago by Canadian footwear manufacturer William H. Kaufman Inc., Sorel Corporation designs, develops and markets rugged footwear and apparel for outdoor industrial and recreational use. The brand was acquired by Columbia Sportswear Company in 2000.
Sorel debuted in 1962 with a line of rugged boots designed to withstand challenging weather conditions. The brand’s flagship Caribou boot – with its waterproof rubber shell, leather upper and removable felt liner – quickly became a favorite of outdoor lovers across North America and is still one of the company’s most popular styles. The Caribou helped drive Sorel to become Kaufman’s best-selling brand accounting for a majority of the Company’s revenues by the 1990s.
Sorel’s popularity extended to other markets as additional footwear styles for men, women and children were introduced, including leather work boots, walking shoes, and indoor leisure footwear. For fall 2002, the brand’s cold weather footwear heritage and loyal following spawned a line of men’s work wear designed to hold up against harsh weather conditions and extended outdoor wear. Sorel now provides year-round functionality and fashion for the entire family.
Sorel is a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbia Sportswear Company, marketing its products through a wide variety of retailers in the United States and abroad.
